Guatemala and the United States Strengthen Cooperation to Combat Drug Trafficking and Organized Crime

Guatemala, June 4, 2026. The President of the Republic, Bernardo Arévalo, and the Minister of National Defense, Henry Saenz, held meetings with the Commander of the United States Southern Command (SOUTHCOM), General Francis L. Donovan, within the framework of existing agreements between both countries, in order to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the areas of hemispheric and national security, counter-narcotics efforts, and the fight against transnational organized crime structures.

During the meeting, the parties reviewed the progress made in recent months in joint efforts to counter the threats posed by drug trafficking networks and other criminal organizations that undermine the security, stability, and development of the region.

The Government of Guatemala maintains a strong commitment to public safety, and the restoration of territorial control are fundamental priorities of its administration.

General Donovan's visit has been instrumental in consolidating coordination and cooperation mechanisms that contribute to addressing the transnational threats affecting the entire region.

Guatemala is today a safer country, with stronger borders and robust institutions that combat organized crime and protect Guatemalan families.
